Benefits to Powder Coating

Powder coating is the superior choice for residential pieces such as patio furniture, light fixtures, hand railings, and heat & air vent. Powder coating is also great for automotive and motorcyle such as wheels, engine blocks and intake heads, suspension and chassis parts.

Why powder instead of paint?

Simply put, powder coating is like placing body armor over metal. It provides an attractive finish, is extremely durable – even scratch resistant, and lasts a very long time. Powder is available in thousands of colors, textures, and finishes providing the customer with endless choices to customize the look of their piece. And because it’s tough it’s also economical, typically lasting several times longer than traditional paint. Powder coating is also environmentally friendly because it is solvent free. Over-sprayed and unused powder can be recycled resulting in minimal waste.

So how exactly does it work?

Fine pigment particles (powder) are electro-statically sprayed onto the piece being coated. The parts being coated are electrically grounded allowing the powder particles to adhere to them. Lastly, the powder coated piece is placed in a high temperature curing oven where the powder melts into a solid coating.

Is powder coating over existing paint recommended?

The answer is no. For best results a pre-treatment should be used. ABJ Custom Powder Coating is proud to use the following pre-treatment methods.

Media Blasting: the process of exfoliating existing paint or coating by forcing solid particles across the surface of the piece at high speed. The result is a smooth, clean finish.

OutGassing: heating the part in a high temperature curing oven to promote the release of petroleum products from the piece.
